May have to inquire at my bank next time I head in there. Could always use some free silver.

In your comment you say, “RULE 6: ”A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”
    Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, right?

Yes. Not every radical is a collectivist… :)

“The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair.” ― H.L. Mencken

I went thru a couple thousand $$ of halves a couple of years ago and found no silver. I began to wonder if the rolling machines had discriminators installed on them to kick out anything not “normal”. Hmmm perhaps I should try again. I was going at it slowly, spending them back into circulation. I have built a relationship with the guy at the bank. I still get bags of dollar coins for spending…so I guess I could up the game.

Yes they do. But only on newer equipment on coins being rolled now. The half dollar rolls either haven’t gone through a machine or went through one many years ago. I read a story on an “alternative” well-known web site stating a bunch of change from a spare change jar was being counted for deposit at a bank and the [new] machine spit out a 90% quarter as a fake due to weight or some criteria. The author was pointing out the irony of the machine identifying the coin as fake.

I have heard of people doing this for years. I think the concentrated “ore” of this type of “urban mining” has been explored in most areas of the country.

But for those with the time & inclination, happy hunting!

While it is remarkable this disabled vet accumulated such a sizable silver stack for free, this was an enormous undertaking and should not be pursued unless you consider it a hobby, can take rejection, and just enjoy urban mining.

I could always use another hobby! I am still kind’ve confused where to start, like who do I talk to to buy a 500$ box of halves? I don’t think the average bank teller would have a clue

  • Hi Chris,

I had a question along the same lines as this story with the guy that got 2k ounces from the banks. Has anyone you talked to looked into or had started a Coinstar franchise? I would think that people must unknowingly dump silver in those things all of the time.

I read about this years ago on the kitco forums. It might have worked years ago, but most silver halves have been gleaned already.

Some people still do it as a hobby, but they go very long periods w/o finding any silver coins.

Of course, it doesn’t cost anything to try!

    Good luck!

It is work but it is a viable means to mine silver. The available halfs in silver are diminishing quickly though as more people enter the field

I started this on a smaller scale in July of 2011 and to date have acquired over 200 ounces. My largest find to date is 103 ounces on a single trip. A teller had received $140 in halfs, almost all were franklins and liberty halfs. evidently someones grandfather passed and they were left with 14 rolls of half dollars and they turned them in. I have searched $500 boxes and on average you may get 2-3 40% halfs per box. Happy hunting but there is little silver left inhalf dollars with everyone doing ths type of mining.
